Fifty years of nightly global low-light imaging satellite observations

چکیده

The history of satellite remote sensing nighttime lights traces it is roots back the U.S. Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) which began flying polar orbiting satellites with cloud imaging sensors in 1970’s. meteorologists found that they could improve weather predictions visible and thermal band imagery. channels on early DMSP worked well daytime—but were unable to see clouds at nights. Visible low light was added mid-1970’s using photomultiplier tubes amplify signal, enabling detection moonlit clouds. In 1992, NOAA established a digital archive for data National Geophysical Data Center Boulder, Colorado. Earth Observation Group (EOG) formed 1994 dedicated efforts making global products uses by science policy communities. Many shortcomings addressed NASA/NOAA Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) day/night (DNB), opened new era studies. total, EOG has produced 65 annual over 650 monthly products.

Fifty Years of HF Doppler Observations

High frequency Doppler observations of the ionosphere began in August of 1957 in Kyoto. The number of the observation points worldwide were about 40 in 1980 and are about 20 at present. By this method the movement of the ionosphere ref lection height and electron density below the height can be observed. Such variations are occurred by a wide variety of sources.

Fifty years of tachycardia.

In 1943 an otherwise healthy girl aged 3 developed measles encephalitis with an accompanying mild left hemiparesis. At this time a persistent tachycardia of 140 beats per minute was noted, and she was referred to Sir John Parkinson at the National Heart Hospital. He made a diagnosis of atrial tachycardia. A trial of digoxin and quinidine proved ineffective, but she remained symptomatically well...

Fifty Years of Synchrotrons

The idea of a pulsed magnet ring, fundamental to the synchrotron, appeared in a proposal by Oliphant [1] in 1943 and was followed by the independent discovery of phase stability by Veksler [2] in 1944 and McMillan [3] in 1945. This opened the door to a demonstration of synchrotron acceleration to 8 MeV by Goward and Barnes [4] in a converted betatron at Woolwich Arsenal, UK. The event, which to...

Fifty Years of Development

Perspectives on development have changed radically over the past half-century, and indeed over the past decade. New evidence and theoretical approaches have deepened and shifted the debates. We have a much better understanding of the relationships among markets, governance, and institutions. Our techniques of empirical analysis and the availability of data have advanced dramatically; indeed one...

receive attention when it creates a pattern than when it fills a conscious need, as did the suggestion that nerve fibers be classified not in terms of their anatomical distribution, but in relation to chemical transmission which Dale made to the Physiological Society in 1933 when he introduced the words "cholmergic" and "adrenergic"; words that have since become firmly established in usage. Qui...
